Newfoundland 2021
September 29 – October 11, 2021
Our adventure begins with a 4 night stay at one of the four corners of the earth….the Fogo Island Inn which sits on an island, off an island. Every one of the 29 one-of-a-kind guest rooms and suites has dramatic floor-to-ceiling windows that open onto the wildest and most powerful ocean on the planet. We will be visiting during Berry Season – one of the 7 seasons here. Slightly cooler temperatures make berry season the perfect time to get outside and amble through the barrens and footpaths while scooping up handfuls of blueberries, raspberries, marshberries, and partridgeberries. Our nature guides and Community Hosts are ready to accompany you for off-the-beaten-path adventures. From extended coastal hikes in areas normally visited only by wildlife, you will be paired with those who know this place best to facilitate encounters with Fogo Island’s still-wild world and its distinctive, centuries-old culture. So many stories to hear, Star Gazing, Bonfires, Nature Watching and even a traditional “Boil up”.
We will transfer to St. Johns to join our home for the next 11 days aboard the Ocean Endeavour (was highlighted on Mighty Ships) to explore Newfoundland at its most authentic by sea! Daily excursions explore the island’s hidden treasures. Our engaging local guides will have you wanting to stay. Canada’s newest province is unlike anywhere else on Earth. Hiking is excellent. Photography, superb. Wildlife and scenery, striking. And the hospitality, sublime. Our expedition team includes musicians, artists, naturalists, scientists, and scholars. Every day is an adventure ashore, and every night is a potential “kitchen party” aboard!

Itinerary
Day 1 – Arrive Gander
Welcome to Newfoundland! Transfer to Fogo Island Inn. Fogo Island Inn is a social business and a community asset founded by Shorefast, a registered Canadian charity with the mandate to promote cultural and economic resiliency for Fogo Island. The Inn is a 100% social business: all operating surpluses are reinvested in the community of Fogo Island through the projects and programs of Shorefast. The Inn was built using primarily private philanthropic funds with the addition of some government grants, and there are no financial contributors seeking a return on their investment. The success of the Inn benefits no individuals, but rather the larger community of Fogo Island.
From its inception, Fogo Island Inn has adopted a responsible, systems-based approach to design and implementation in order to conduct itself in a way that demonstrates and upholds a higher fidelity relationship with the natural world. The Inn has a concrete and accredited environmental strategy, ethical suppliers, and tactics in place to protect the environment. We are deeply committed to and invested in all things local, and we consistently surpass the requirements of environmental laws.

L’Anse aux Meadows, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the only authenticated Norse settlement in North America. The archaeological remains found here in 1960 date to approximately 1,000 AD. Day 7 – Red Bay
The Red Bay Basque Whaling Station became aUNESCO World Heritage site in 2013. Basque whalers operated out of the Red Bay harbour in the 1500s: North America’s first export industry. The interpretation centre at Red Bay is excellent. Here we find tools, personal items, and navigational instruments recovered from the wreck of the whaling ship San Juan. The ship was lost in a storm in 1565 and found centuries later submerged in the harbour. We’ll visit nearby Saddle Island to learn the history of the whaling industry.

Day 8 – Gros More National Park and Woody Point
Gros Morne’s Tablelands, a 600 metre plateau, form one of the world’s best examples of exposed mantle. Normally found below the Earth’s crust, the mineral-rich rocks support very little life, making the Tablelands an eerie landscape. We will offer various walking and hiking options here. Views of Bonne Bay are spectacular. Gros Morne’s interpretation centre is excellent and the town of Woody Point is a delight to explore.

Fogo Island Inn sits on an island, off an island, at one of the four corners of the Earth. Situated along Iceberg Alley, all 29 rooms and suites feature floor-to-ceiling windows opening onto the wildest and most powerful ocean on the planet. Furnished with handmade quiet luxuries, they serve as a welcome refuge from the numbing uniformity of modern times. The island’s still-wild world has caribou to track, hills of berries to forage, nature trails to explore and countless birds and sea life to behold. This award-winning Inn is operated as a social business, is a community asset and 100% of the operating surpluses are reinvested into the community.
Fogo Island Inn’s dining room was named among the top three “Best New Restaurants” in Canada by enRoute magazine. Led by Executive Chef Jonathan Gushue, the Inn’s culinary team is responsible for the Inn’s 48-seat dining room, 35-seat lounge and, for on- and off-site catering. The team finds inspiration in the ocean’s bounty, from ingredients grown on the island, and from Fogo Island’s time-honoured outport cooking traditions. Everything coming out of the kitchen is handmade – sausage, bread, baked goods, bacon, and mustards. The menu changes with the wind and the waves and the seven seasons: a culinary mission that respects and celebrates the profound gift of place that is Fogo Island.
